Overview

In the language of computers, a file system is a technique of storing and organizing the data in order to make it easier to locate and access these files. In technical terms, the file system is a set of intangible data types which are implemented for storage, manipulation, hierarchical organization, access as well as retrieval of data. Accidental deletion or corruption of file systems can hamper the information stored and can lead to serious hassles. The various types of file systems can be broadly classified into three types:

Disk file systems

The disk file system is designed for storage of files on the data storage media such as a hard disk. Some of the disk file systems are FAT, FAT32, HFS, NTFS, ext2, ext3, ODS-5, UDF and ISO 9660. 

Network file systems

The network file system acts like a client for the remote file access protocol, and provide access to the files on a server. Some of the most prominent examples of file systems are clients for NFS, SMB protocols, as well as FTP and WebDAV.

Special purpose file systems

The special purpose file system refers to any file system that is neither disk nor network file system. These include the systems where files are dynamically arranged using software, and are intended for purposes such as communicating between computer processes. They are most commonly used by the file centric OS like Unix. The deep space exploration crafts such as Voyager I & II make the use of digital tape based file systems. Most of the modern space crafts such as Cassini-Huygens use Real time OS file system or RTOS file system.

TestDisk

The TestDisk program helps us in retrieving out damaged or lost partition. The first step in using this software is to determine the kind of hardware from where the data has been lost. The program will list all the storage devices and then analyze them to find all partitions in it. If there is an NTFS or FAT file system, then you can either rebuild or create a backup using the software.
