Damaged Flash Memory
What is Flash Memory?
Flash memory is a kind of non volatile memory which can be erased and rewritten electrically. It does not require any power in order to maintain the data that has been stored in the chip. Its microchip arrangement has been made in such a way that a section of the memory can be erased in one single action or ‘Flash’, hence the name. It offers a quick read access time along with a better shock resistance in comparison to hard disks. Due to these features, it is very popular for applications like storing data on battery powered devices. The logical structure of a flash memory is shown in the corresponding diagram.

How is Flash Memory damaged?
Flash Memory devices can be damaged due to both physical as well as logical damage.
These devices can easily be written on and overwritten without any prior warning. Consequently the probability of critical data being lost or overwritten is very high. The flash memory devices can also be damaged due to battery or system failure, re-format, faulty electronics, power surge, hardware breakdown or software malfunctioning. Due to this, the data can be damaged or lost. The damage to the flash disk can be caused due to something that you are already aware of or something that is not visually apparent. These flash memory devices are sensitive to high humidity and static discharge. Flash media are of various types and are used in the number of devices such as cell phones, cameras and portable USB devices.
Repairing Flash memory devices
When the flash memory devices fail or get corrupted due to some kind of physical problems, they are not recognized appropriately by the host devices. In such cases, the drive has to be disassembled and mended. Alternatively, the Flash chip has to be removed from the PCB and then read on a special device for recovering its contents. This procedure is quite complex as most of the flash devices which are used these days comprise of more than one chip. It is a very intricate task to reverse engineer the schema that is used to these memory chips together. Therefore, this difficult task is bestowed in the hands of the data recovery services and experts. This process is used to restore all deleted and corrupted files from the flash memory device, even after the drive has been re-formatted.
Flash Recovery Software
Files from flash memory devices can be accidentally lost or deleted because of hardware malfunction. Often the flash memory gets reformatted. However, software like DiskInternal Flash Recovery can efficiently restore these files in few minutes. The program scans the memory and displays all files which can be restored from the flash memory device.
These programs work best to retrieve movies and images from external drives like CompactFlash, SmartMedia, MicroDrive, Memory Stick, PC Card, Secure Digital Card, Multimedia Card and the like.
