Data Recovery is the procedure of retrieving data from a corrupted, damaged, failed or an inaccessible storage device, when it becomes unfeasible to access it normally. Most often the data is salvaged from storage devices like hard disks, CDs, DVDs, storage tapes, RAID and other similar media. The inaccessibility may be caused due to physical or logical damage to the device which may prevent it from being mounted by an operating system. Alternatively, the term data recovery also refers to the process of salvaging and securing the deleted data from a storage device, for spying or forensic purposes.
Basically, two kinds of damage may strike the storage media. They are:
- Physical Damage
- Logical Damage
Physical damage may be caused to the storage media due to a variety of failures. The metallic substrate or the dye layer of the CD-ROMs can be scratched off, mechanical failures like failed motors or head crashed may attack the hard disks; the storage tapes can simply break. Physical damage may not only cause substantial data loss, but can affect the logical drive structure as well.
Physical damages are difficult to be repaired by the end users. For instance, opening up a hard disk in ordinary environment may cause dust to settle on its surface, further leading to damage. The end users also do not have the required expertise or technical know-how to repair them. Thus, the data recovery companies are bestowed with the task of retrieving the data. The companies make the use of Class 100 cleanroom facilities for protecting the media during the repair. A number of times, we come across instances of users using bizarre tricks to get a bad disk running. These tricks may include freezing the drive or manually spinning it on the floor. The data recovery professionals strictly forbid these tricks as they may lead to additional damage.
Logical damage to the file system is much more common than the physical damage. Logical damage is mainly caused due to power outages which prevents the file system from being written to the media. The inconsistent file system may lead to numerous problems such as system crashes, strange behavior of system or concrete data loss. There are many programs that work to correct these inconsistencies. Most of the operating systems have these repair tools in-built such as the chkdsk utility in Microsoft Windows.
Recovering techniques for retrieving data lost due to physical damage: The process of retrieving data from a physically damaged drive involves many varied techniques. Some of the damage can be revamped by replacing the faulty parts of the hard disk. Though this procedure will make the disk usable, still it may have logical damage. To counter this, the disk imaging process is used to recoverable the data from the readable surface. After acquiring this image, it can be examined for logical damage and much of the file system can be reconstructed this way.

Recovering techniques for retrieving data lost due to logical damage
Primarily, two techniques are used in order to recover data that is lost due to logical damage to the storage media. These are Consistency checking and Zero-knowledge analysis. Consistency checking involves scanning the disk and checking it to ensure its consistency with its specification. The zero knowledge analysis technique, on the other hand, involves using the hints that an undamaged file system might provide, and then rebuilding it from scratch. This process allows the extraction of data from one device to another.

- How did you find ABKdata?
- GeekSquad checked my drive and
I was told that I need Level-3 Recovery
I searched Google and found ABKdata.
- Did you talk to any other companies?
- Yes I did. I called 2 other companies.
- Why did you choose ABKdata?
- I felt most comfortable talking to
Edward. He told me that he used to be
a technician before and that made me
feel confident of the information I
received.
- Did you receive a quote prior to
sending your drive to our company?
- Yes, he gave me a range between
$499 - $999.
- I am assuming he was right
on the money :)
- Of course, otherwise I would not
go for it.
- What about speed? How long
did it take?
- I did not care for expedited service,
I asked for standard. All together it
took 4 days to receive my data.
- Most important - Data. Did you
receive all files that you needed?
- And more :) I was hoping to get at least
data back, but I also got windows and
programs. That alone saved me time
and money on reloading my computer.
- Any suggestion or notes?
- No suggestions, but I would like to
thank you again, for an outstanding
support and quality of service.
Thank you.
